Stock loans are fantastic, fast and cost-effective lending products. You can use these short-term loans in lots of different ways.
If you take a stock loan, you will pledge your stocks to your lenders for the duration of the loan. While you still own the stock, the lender controls them, using them as collateral for the finance. You will lose ownership of your stocks which will be transferred to the lender if you cannot repay the loan or meet the repayment schedule.
In return for pledging your stocks, your lender will offer you a credit line. You don't have to use this immediately. Instead, you can use it any time during the loan period, as and when needed. However, if you do want to draw down funds, you will need to do so and repay the loan capital by the time the loan comes to an end. This credit line is very useful to most borrowers as it means you can arrange it in advance, so you have immediate access to liquidity as soon as you need it.
Stock loans last from a few weeks up to about three years.
You can use a stock lending for almost any purpose – it's a flexible type of finance. Bearing in mind that there's not any specific way to use this type of loan, some everyday use cases for stock loans are:
You can use stock loans in lots of other scenarios, too. Lenders are open to how you will use your credit line, as long as you can show how and why you want to use this type of finance. Provided you can demonstrate a good plan that supports your wish to borrow, stock loans are a great way of accessing cash to make something happen or realise a goal.
Knowing the benefits and risks of this type of lending is essential if you want a stock loan. Below is a general overview of these, but we also suggest you get in touch to have a chat. We'll talk you through this type of finance in more detail and advise you on your personal situation.
If you're not familiar with stock loans, or you've never used this type of finance before, here are some top tips to get you started:
We can broker any size stock loan. Contact us if you're interested in this type of finance. We can help you if you're familiar with this type of lending or simply want to explore your options and learn more about how stock loans work.
Let’s TalkWe can broker large and small stock loans. You will usually be able to borrow about 50% of the value of your stocks. Sometimes, it's possible to borrow more, but this is usually only the case if you are very wealthy and want a large loan. Here, lenders will use your other wealth to support a higher lending amount. In some cases, you won't be able to borrow as much as 50% of the stock value.
We can broker stock loans very quickly. Underwriting is much faster than other types of finance because stocks are an easy and fast asset class to value. While a mortgage requires an in-person evaluation, for example, the value of your stocks can usually be done electronically, which speeds up the process compared to other types of borrowing. Once lenders have valued your stock, they want to move quickly in case that valuation changes, which also speeds up the process.
The more liquid your stocks and the more capital and income you have (that's not associated with your stocks), the easier borrowing will be.
We can broker both large and small stock loans. One of the advantages of small loans is that they are usually cheaper than other types of short-term credit, like using a credit card. You can borrow a relatively small amount – less than £10,000 if you need cash quickly but don't want to sell your stocks to get the cash you need.
It's quick and easy to get a small stock loan, especially when we broker them for you – you'll have access to a credit line in just a few days. You'll always need to bear in mind, though, that you can't get a stock loan if you don't have a good credit score or if you can't pay back what you've borrowed. You can use this type of finance to fund an income gap or solve a cash-flow problem, but not if you're in financial trouble or have lots of other debt you can't pay off.
Large stock loans are usually used in different ways. You might want to generate capital to buy a house, reinvest in the stock market, and create capital for a business or investment. We can broker these loans very quickly, and you will find that our advice and lender access greatly facilitate your ability to access this type of loan. Not every broker can arrange large stock loans, loans against unlisted stocks or a single line of stock, but we can. There is no upper limit on the amount we can broker for you.
There are lots of stock loan lenders out there, and they all have different approaches. Shopping the market to get various offers takes time, even if lenders say that the initial application process is fast. They'll all offer different LTVs, terms, and interest rates; some are much more competitive than others. It can also be difficult to identify the best deal if it's your first time taking out a stock loan. The cheapest deal isn't always the best deal for you, and while it can be tempting to make a choice based on price alone, sometimes there's more to consider. There might also be parts of the deal you need to understand better to see what the most competitive stock loan for you actually is.
When you work with a broker like Global Bridging, it's us that has to do the hard work for you. We'll get you a range of offers from different lenders and then walk you through each. We can help you understand which loan will be the best offer for you and why. This is always personalised advice, rather than just what looks best on paper. We can also shed light on things you need to be aware of, including early repayment fees, costs you might have overlooked, restrictive terms and so on. We'll also ensure you can access your capital as soon as possible by reducing how much work you have to do to complete the application process.
Stock loans aren't the same as other types of finance where monthly repayments cover a mixture of capital and interest until you have paid the outstanding amount. These loans are always short-term; you'll borrow for a few weeks, a few months, or up to about three years. Because they aren't longer loans, you'll usually pay interest monthly, but not the loan capital, which is then due at term.
All this means that it's really important to plan how you will repay the credit. Lenders will need to know that you'll have enough liquidity to be able to repay the loan at term. How you will do this depends on how you use the loan. You can refinance or repay the loan using capital you've received in another capacity. That might be from selling other assets, the income you've saved, with money you've obtained from other sources. Specifics will count here – you'll need to be able to show lenders you've thought your exit through and can deliver on it, backed up by facts and supporting documents. If you plan to pay back the loan using profits from reinvesting the capital (either in other stocks or asset classes), lenders will want additional documentation that underlines your ability to successfully deliver a return on investment in this way, credentials of your expertise and track record to support lending.
